Polaris Project Japan | Director of communication and development

Position Description:

Polaris Project is an internationally recognized organization headquartered in the United States that has been working to combat human trafficking and modern-day slavery since 2002. Polaris Project Japan (PPJ) is a registered independent nonprofit located in Japan whose operations began in 2004.This position would be employed by Polaris Project Japan exclusively and would be located in the Tokyo. PPJ is one of the only nonprofit organizations working to fight human trafficking in Japan.

Polaris Project has operated a local office in Tokyo, Japan since 2004. This office – Polaris Project Japan (PPJ) – is currently seeking a Director of communication and development, who will be primarily responsible for our public communications and fundraising activities. The Diretor of communication and development will work under the direction of the Japan Program Coordinator, but will be expected to take initiative and work independently. The position is currently for one year, with its continuance subject to extended funding. The first three months will be considered a probationary period, at the end of which, the Director of communication and development will be reviewed and further employment will be dependent on successful performance.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with a dedicated staff at the small office of an international NGO at the forefront of combatting human trafficking. It is especially important that the Director of communication and development is able to present our organization to corporate sponsors and donors, necessitating strong presentation and communications skills. Although no prior experience in the non-profit sector is required, the Director of communication and development must be committed to human and women’s rights, and be interested in fighting human trafficking.


The Director of communication and development will:

  • Be responsible for our public communications activities, including:
    • Raising awareness about the presence of human trafficking in Japan and engaging the public and relevant stakeholders in recognizing this as a domestic issue in Japan;
    • Effectively communicating our programs and impact to a constituency of followers who support our work;
    • Developing a public outreach and communications strategy;
    • Managing communications materials, social networking efforts, traditional media efforts, newsletters and action alerts, and the organizational website;
    • Helping to produce a quarterly analysis of human trafficking trends in Japan;
  • Play a leading role in our fundraising activities, including:
    • Helping us to raise more funds to enable programmatic growth to fight human trafficking in Japan;
    • Donor research, cultivation, and relationship management;
    • Organizing fundraising events and managing fundraising campaigns;
  • Oversee grants management including reporting and proposal writing;
  • Provide overall management for our team of Volunteers and Fellows, including:
    • Recruiting, training and meeting regularly with both full-time on-site Fellows as well as volunteers.
  • Fulfill general administrative tasks, including:  
    • Phone answering and office maintenance;
    • Internal database management including donation processing.


Qualifications:

  • Passion and commitment to advancing human and women’s rights
  • Professional fluency in written and spoken Japanese and English, including excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required, and proficiency in web design desirable.
  • Experience with online marketing/outreach/fundraising is a plus, including creative use social networking sites.
  • Experience, competence, and confidence in supervising volunteers.
  • Ability to set and balance multiple priorities and plan ahead.
  • Experience with Salesforce CRM database a plus.
  • Resilient, positive, and energetic attitude.
  • Team player who is willing to pitch in on diverse projects to meet organizational goals.
  • Innovative, creative problem solver with an entrepreneurial spirit.
